Welcome to Year 2
Miss Simmons & Mrs Brogden
We hope you have had a wonderful summer holiday and are coming back to school ready and raring to go!
This half term
Our theme this term is called ‘Food Glorious Food' This is a science and Design and Technology focused theme and children will learn all about food and everything related to it, from healthy eating to where our food comes from and following recipes.
A busy half term for English – the children will be learning about: writing stories and using adjectives and coordinating conjunctions such as ‘and’ and ‘but’ to make their sentences longer and more interesting. They will also be learning to use commas to punctuate lists and using ‘bossy’ words when they are writing instructions for recipes.
In Maths we will be focussing on place value for numbers up to 100. The children will be learning how to partition a number into tens and units. We will then move onto addition and subtraction in lots of different formats with a big focus on word problems towards the end of the half term.
Our class books this half term will be ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle, ‘Beware of Boys’ by Tony Blundell, ‘I will not ever never eat a tomato’ by Lauren Childs and ‘Revolting Recipes’ by Roald Dahl. Although we will, of course, share lots of other, exciting books as a class on a daily basis.
Your child will have a reading book from the Key Stage 1 Library, which must be in school every day. There are many opportunities for reading with teachers during the school day so it is important that children do have a book and their reading record in school. You should read with your child as often as possible during the week at home, we expect that you will write in your child’s reading record at least 3 times a week, this is especially important in year 2. This half term we will be focusing on retrieving facts from a text summarising a text and finding synonyms for common words to increase their vocabulary.
For spellings, children should practise the rules which we are learning in class, which will be sent home on a Friday. There are also words from the National Curriculum which the children need to know and practice as much as possible, these will be sent home at the beginning of every term.
For maths children will receive Schofield and Sims books in the Autumn term which will be collected in and marked weekly.
There will also be a reading grid sent home with different tasks on, we ask that you choose 6 tasks to complete with your child, these will be collected at the end of every half term.
PE is currently timetabled for Thursdays and Fridays but children should have their kit in school everyday. The children will be taking part in gymnastics as well as outside adventurous activities such as orienteering as well as using the school grounds to keep fit with a variety of games and exercises.
Resources are all provided for Year 2 children, they do not have to bring in a pencil case. They may use their own colouring pencils or felt tips for some art lessons, but children must keep any pencil cases that they bring in, in their bag or tray for most of the day.
Thank you for your continued support.
If you have any questions regarding any of the information above or regarding your child’s learning and progress, please do not hesitate to pop in and see me at the end of the day or alternatively make an appointment with the office.
