EYFS Curriculum Overview

Our themes this year are:

I wonder...

what is special?

I wonder...

what's in the sky?

I wonder...

what's outside the window?

Our termly theme titles enable practitioners to support the children's learning of the skills and knowledge set out in our curriculum map through their interests. We begin each theme by asking the "I wonder" question to the children and use their responses to plan enhancements to our engaging learning environment.

Prime Areas of Learning

Communication and Language is promoted through a language rich ethos and environment in which adults narrate, ask questions, model thinking, provide a running commentary, repeat and extend language and give children reasons and a desire to talk.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development is highly valued and underpinned by our school values.

Children’s emotional well being thrives when they have positive and strong relationships with adults and other children. We create a nurturing climate and ethos firstly through listening to children and taking into account their needs. Adults model positive behaviours such as being a good friend and showing respect and fairness.

Children in Early Years follow the same values in regard to behaviour as the rest of the school. These are:

Be ready

                           Be respectful

Be safe

Fine motor development relies on children having well developed gross motor strength and recognise the strong links between physical development and the ability to control and manipulate writing tools. Within the environment adults actively encourage children to build their strength, stamina, balance,

coordination and dexterity.  Children take part in activities such as Disco Dough as well as weekly PE sessions which develop both their gross and fine motor skills. This is supported through daily opportunities to use these skills during play.

Specific Areas of Learning

Reading and the enjoyment of books is highly valued and promoted through through daily direct teaching in the form of Phonic sessions and Story and Rhyme Times. For each theme, key texts are carefully identified for Reception and Preschool. These are explored in detail to help children become familiar with its structure and content. To help children make connections across their learning each area of the provision is also equipped with relevant fiction and non-fiction texts for children to reference knowledge and stimulate ideas.

We aim to develop enthusiastic emerging writers who have an enduring and positive attitude to writing. This begins with mark making using shapes, patterns and symbols and then progresses to forming letters and words. We provide a range of mark making opportunities in our continuous provision and value the different ways that children communicate their ideas.

Our environment and provision enables children to practise, rehearse and apply mathematical knowledge and skills. They are encouraged to investigate numbers by exploring their characteristics and patterns. Children have opportunities to develop the mathematical skills learnt in adult led activities during their play. Adults support this through encouraging the children to talk about their thinking, provide explanations and give reasons for their answers.

Children are encouraged to find out about other people and the world around them and we capitalise on their thrill of discovery and their desire to find out more. We use planned themes and unplanned moments to talk about artefacts, significant events, places, communities and the natural world. These learning opportunities enable children to develop an appreciation of the world they live in as well as develop an understanding of past and present events.

Children are actively encouraged to be inventive and imaginative, and we enable them to express heir creativity in ways that are personal to them. We encourage this freedom of expression through art, music, dance, stories and imaginative play.
